The man who stabbed himself in the neck at his arrest Sunday, Sept. 10 is reported stable and will be transferred from Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to the Jefferson County Jail upon his imminent release, according to Detective Sergeant Brett Anglin.

“It’s a miracle he’s alive,” Anglin said.

Anglin corrected a couple of details published in last week’s Leader; namely, the man’s life was saved by the combined efforts of several people on scene, but it was largely completed by two sheriff’s deputies: Gordon Tamura and Dean Murray.

Murray held the gauze and applied pressure to the man’s neck wound until East Jefferson Fire Rescue arrived.

Additionally, the man was arrested for stabbing his brother’s significant other, not his wife.

The incident occurred near A+ Equipment Rentals on State Route 20, near Jacob Miller Road.

The victim sustained several stab wounds to her neck. At the time, she provided information about the suspect and a description. She was Life Flighted to Harborview.

A drone search and assistance from the Kitsap K-9 unit proved unsuccessful. Detectives and deputies were at the scene until about 1:30 a.m. investigating, but were still unable to locate him.

The following morning, the sheriff’s department received several reports, including from an off-duty officer, of a man sighted darting in and out of the woods near Seton Road.

Several units were dispatched, including undercover detectives.

“We did this because we knew he was hiding from law enforcement,” Anglin explained, who drove an unmarked vehicle.

The suspect was confronted by the deputies and detectives. At the time, he refused commands to drop the knife and stand down. He begged to be killed and held the knife to his own throat.

When he started to walk away, nonlethal foam rounds were fired. At this, the suspect immediately turned around and stabbed himself in the neck.

The deputies attempted to tase him; he stabbed himself once more before the second round of tasing incapacitated him.

By then, he was bleeding heavily from his neck wound.

Immediate life-saving efforts commenced. The man remained conscious throughout.
